AKC Sportsman of the Year


In 2007, the SCOA Board decided to open the nominations process for the Friend of the Saluki and the AKC Sportsman of the Year awards to the Fancy. Nominations for either award are to be made via 'hard copy' letter mailed to the Bev Griffith, Awards Selection Process Committee Chair.

Nominations for the 2009 awards must be
received by March 1, 2009

Nominations Criteria

Friend of the Saluki Award

Instituted in 2002, this award was presented to the member(s) who, over a period of time, has given selflessly, in many venues, not always for their own gain or benefit, and who has helped whenever and wherever needed. In January 2007, the Board voted to make this award eligible to the International saluki fancy and authorized creation of a committee to solicit nominations, review nominations and make a recommendation to the Board. This award is made prior to the Best of Breed Judging at the National Specialty.


Individuals nominated must meet one or more of the following criteria over a sustained period of time :

  • demonstrated dedication to the saluki
  • active in local or regional breed or allbreed clubs
  • contributed to a better understanding of health issues
  • contributed to an awareness of the legislative process and threats to saluki breeders and owners

AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship Award

Beginning in 2007, AKC provides each member club with one AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship medallion per year. This annual award may by presented by the club to one member in good standing with the AKC, in recognition of outstanding sportsmanship. AKC will list winners of this award on its website and in various publications.

Individuals nominated shall be an SCOA member in good standing who is to be recognized for providing outstanding service to the Club.

Criteria for nominees might include:

  • leadership within the club as demonstrated by solid contributions to committees, events, or other activities that support the mission of the club.
  • outstanding support of Club activities and directions
